Today, I started reading “The Scarlet Letter “although I was not so optimistic at its first glance. The first chapter itself has caused me to rethink my opinion. Set in Boston, Massachusetts, the opening scene of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter, sets the mood for the sorrow and empathy that is to follow. The dark and dense atmosphere is described pretty well according to the Puritan era."Sad-colored garments and gray, steeple crowned hats, the door of which was heavily timbered with oak, and studded with iron spikes." I think the writer has done a great job by using long drawn sentences that enhance the beauty of setting the whole scene up for the readers. I like how towards the end amidst all the sadness and pessimism, the rosebush near the prison door, symbolizes a sense of tranquility guess that’s where the ‘Scarlet’ in the title comes from. Leaving the introduction of the characters, for the next chapter, Hawthorne builds up the excitement and keeps me curious as to how he introduces the characters.
